Low energy availability/Relative Energy Deficiency (REDs).
Low Energy Availability occurs when your body doesn’t have enough energy (calories) left over for essential functions after accounting for the energy used during exercise. In other words, you’re burning more fuel than you’re putting in. This can happen unintentionally (due to under-fueling or high training loads) or intentionally (through disordered eating or dieting).
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a broader medical condition that results from LEA. It affects many body systems, not just reproductive or bone health, and can impact both female and male athletes.
Diagnosis involves a detailed clinical history, physical exam, and possibly blood tests, bone scans (DXA), or dietary assessments. It’s a multidisciplinary process involving doctors, sports dietitians, psychologists, and physiotherapists as needed.
Regardless of the severity, consulting a medical professional is recommended for proper diagnosis and recovery planning. Specialist Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians play a vital role in guiding rehabilitation strategies tailored to individual needs.
