Frequently Asked Questions

Despite being called Sport and Exercise Physicians, our patients come from all walks of life and the majority of our patients are not in fact sportsmen/sportswomen.

Our expertise is in musculoskeletal medicine with a focus on non-operative management although we will work closely with specialist surgeons should you come to require surgery. We endeavour to provide you with a balanced opinion on managing your injuries.

Unlike other specialties in medicine, we work in a truly multi-disciplinary environment, working closely with your general practitioner, physiotherapists, surgeons and other allied health practitioners to ensure that no stone is unturned in assisting you in your recovery. We draw our experience from the team environment afforded to us in our training with elite athletes and we translate this experience into looking after you.

We ask that you bring all correspondence relevant to your injury. This includes reports from medical practitioners (GPs, Specialists) and correspondence from allied health practitioners. Please provide us with the details of any imaging you may have had, including X-rays, Ultrasound, CT, and MRI scans, as this will assist us in determining the need for further investigations. For upper limb-related injuries, please wear appropriate clothing permitting a thorough examination. For lower limb injuries, please bring a pair of shorts as this will allow a detailed examination of your injured body part.

You usually need a referral to see one of our specialists. You will need this before your appointment, preferably before booking to see us. You can get a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

Initial consultations are generally 30-45 minutes long (although they can be longer for more complex problems). Follow up consultations can vary depending on the nature of the follow-up. Most follow-up appointments will last 15-30 minutes.

For concussion consultations, the appointment times, especially the initial appointment, can be longer than a consultation for an injury.

In most cases, performing an injection on the same day as an initial consultation will be difficult. This is because a standard initial consultation may take up to 45 minutes, and the treating doctor will determine the appropriateness of an injection during this appointment. Should you have any questions, please speak with your treating doctor directly.
